COMMENT
[FUNCTION] Produces peripheral paralysis by blocking neuromuscular transmission at the postsynaptic site. Binds to muscular and neuronal (alpha-7, alpha-8, and alpha-9) nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Blocks the extracellular increase of dopamine evoked by nicotine only at the higher dose (4.2 uM).
[SUBUNIT] Monomer in solution, homodimer in crystal state.
[SUBCELLULAR LOCATION] Secreted protein.
[TISSUE SPECIFICITY] Expressed by the venom gland.
[TOXIC DOSE] LD(50) is 0.3 mg/kg by subcutaneous injection.
[SIMILARITY] Belongs to the snake toxin family. Type II alpha-neurotoxin subfamily.
[CAUTION] Ref.1 indicates that a number of mRNA with sequence conflict(s) are produced by RNA editing. This seems not to be the case as discussed in Ref.2.

[FUNCTION] Beta-1 bungarotoxin is a presynaptic neurotoxin of the venom. The B chain is homologous to venom basic protease inhibitors but has no protease inhibitor activity and is non-toxic.
[SUBUNIT] Heterodimer; disulfide-linked. The A chains have phospholipase A2 activity and the B chains show homology with the basic protease inhibitors.
[SUBCELLULAR LOCATION] Secreted protein.
[TISSUE SPECIFICITY] Expressed by the venom gland.
